Newcastle Edge Past AFC Wimbledon to Secure Carabao Cup Fourth Round Spot

Date:

Newcastle United secured a narrow 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup third round, with Fabian Schär’s penalty in first-half stoppage time proving decisive. The game at St James’ Park saw Newcastle struggle to break down a resilient Wimbledon defence, but they ultimately advanced to the next round, where they will face Chelsea.

The match was a physical affair, with Wimbledon, a League Two side, showing grit and determination against their Premier League opponents. Newcastle dominated possession, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by. The breakthrough came just before halftime when Miguel Almiron was brought down in the box, and Schär confidently slotted the resulting penalty past Wimbledon’s goalkeeper.

In the second half, Newcastle continued to control the game but could not extend their lead, with Willock and Almiron both missing good opportunities. Wimbledon’s defence, led by Alex Harbottle, stood firm, making key blocks to keep the scoreline close. Newcastle introduced substitutes Bruno GuimarĂ£es and Anthony Gordon to add some attacking flair, but the home side had to settle for a single goal to see them through.

This hard-fought win sends Newcastle into the fourth round, where they face a much sterner test against Chelsea.
