Chase & Status – 2 Ruff Vol.1

Date:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Chase & Status, the acclaimed electronic music duo, have earned high praise for their latest release, described in just two words as “Absolutely nasty!” This commendation was echoed during a memorable Boiler Room DJ set, a platform known for its packed, underground events where DJs electrify the crowd. Particularly noteworthy was a recent performance by Saul Milton, half of Chase & Status, who took the stage without his partner Will Kennard. During this set, Milton featured their single “Baddadan,” which has been creating a stir on TikTok, capturing the audience’s wild reaction to the track.

“Baddadan,” characterized by its mantra “Nobody badder than we,” has enjoyed a seven-week run in the UK top 10 and is a strong contender for the dance track of the year. The song’s appeal lies in its deep vocal delivery by guest artist Irah and a bass synth drop so intense it could warrant a public health warning. Its success marks a high point in Chase & Status’s career, 15 years after their debut album.

Aside from “Baddadan,” two other songs by the duo are currently in the top 25. “Disconnect,” featuring Becky Hill, offers a lighter vibe and is not included in their latest collection. However, “Liquor & Cigarettes,” which features Brighton rapper ArrDee, is part of this release, continuing the trend of powerful basslines that have become a signature of their sound.

Over their career, Milton and Kennard have explored various genres, from pop collaborations with artists like Emeli Sandé and Tom Grennan to rock-influenced tracks that even led them to perform at the metal festival Download in 2012. Their recent works, “Rtrn II Jungle” and “What Came Before,” see them returning to their jungle and drum and bass roots. Kennard emphasizes their focus on instinctive music-making, and this is evident in their latest tracks where breakbeats and electrifying electronics take center stage. Songs like “On the Block” and “Massive & Crew” deliver an intense, industrial sound.

Unconventionally, Chase & Status are not labeling this latest release as an album but rather a mixtape. These potent tracks, designed for the intensity of a crowded, dark club setting, offer a unique experience that is both overwhelming and exhilarating, true to their gritty, yet appealing, musical style.
